I both agree and disagree. I’m not saying we should be selfish—definitely not. But when the Bible says “Love your neighbour as yourself,” to me it means we must first know and love ourselves in order to truly love others. That feels a little contradictory at times, and I’m still trying to understand it fully. I just pray God opens this up for me and helps me see both passages clearly.

Doc, do you remember around 1984, children were being told that they are great?

My, daughter came home telling me, & I sat her down and said, God created you in His image & yes you are a marvel. We all are, dear. This isn’t good what they’re teaching. It seems like you are being taught to be conceited, life will be all about you, & it isn’t.

She went to school the next day and spoke with her teacher. Her teacher said, “I hadn’t looked at it, like that, but your mother is right, & I won’t teach that anymore”.

My daughter came home all smiles, mom, mom!, teacher thinks you’re smart! Why’s that? Because she’s not going to teach that to her class ever again.
